Family Affair

Hello there,

In December, I talked with a lovely lady who wanted me to make a skirt for her and matching skirts for her little princesses. She said there was no hurry so we took some time going back and forth online until she found the fabric she wanted. In January, when I went to get the measurements, it turned into the skirts plus vests and bow-ties for her king and prince and a pair of shorts for the prince.
I'm really grateful for the opportunity.

Enjoy the pictures below.
** I pressed the clothes before delivery; please excuse the creases below. **

Bold Stripes

Hi there!!

I hope you are having a lovely December so far.

To be honest, I've been feeling out of sorts recently; a bit grumpy and tired. I know things are not good when I 'm beginning to be impatient with myself and with others (including Boss. gasp!!!).
I'm now trying to get more sleep and take better care of myself so here's to things looking up soon (very soon, I hope).

Today's post is on this green butterfly sleeve top and stripy midi pencil skirt I made a while ago. I feel good when I wear items I made but unless it's a dress, those items are usually paired with something else. Don't get me wrong, I do like that also - the fact that I make pieces that complement others in my closet - but wearing a complete "me-made" outfit has it's own special warmth.

A few Sundays ago, the uniform for my choir (LA Voice at RCCG Love Assembly) was "wear something green". I wanted to step out of my comfort zone (which would have been green top with black pants/skirt) and I sent a picture to Zi of this top and skirt and asked what she thought (she's the fashionista in this duo). She approved!!!!

Enjoy the pictures below.
I really wanted to wear a brown belt but I couldn't find it in time. Sure enough, I found it as soon as I walked back into my apartment after church. Next time ...

Sheer Panel Skirt

Hello friends!!!

Heads up: this week's post is going to have more pictures than I usually have.
No special reason except that I was unable to decide which pictures to cut from the ones we took on Sunday.
So ... on with the post!!!

The first time I saw a skirt with a sheer panel, I knew I wanted one and that I was going to make one for myself. That was probably a year and a half ago but better late than never, right?
I bought the brocade fabric at the same time as the gold and black one in this post so it's been about a year since I've had it.
We picked red as the main color for my choir at RCCG Love Assembly for last Sunday (10/25) and to be honest, I hadn't thought much about what I was going to wear. Red is one of my favorite colors so I knew I had at least one red dress, pair of pants, blouse, skirt, sweater and pair of shoes.
I recently made up my mind (again!) to work on using what I have in my fabric stash - mainly because I just moved and couldn't believe how many boxes of fabric were loaded in the truck. While designing a dress to use up some white lace, I took a detour and drew up the skirt. I didn't get to work on it immediately as I had a custom order to finish but I got the skirt done just in time to wear it on Sunday!!!!

Enjoy the pictures below (see if you notice the photobomber).

Lacy Goodness Continued

As promised in the August post of Ms. N's blue and pink dress (here), here's more on the gold fabric that she dropped off.

It was the Aso-Ebi fabric for a friend's wedding on 9/12 which is also my dad's birthday :).
She sent me a picture of a gold midi dress and asked for the same thing and I'm so happy she was pleased with what I delivered.

Stay tuned ... I'll show you what I make with the remnant and some red crepe fabric.

Enjoy the pictures and video below.

Lady in Gold

I got matching silk lining fabric

It's got a slit and the inside seams were covered in bias tape to prevent any itching from the sequins on the lace.

Ready for a fitting

I took it in after the fitting and it no longer fit on my dress form but here's the final dress.

Took a video while she was posing for pictures. :)

I didn't have an Aso-Ebi outfit but I wanted to join in and show my support so I made a fold-over clutch.
Perhaps I will write a tutorial on that ...

Hi-Low Peplum Skirts

* Boss told me last week that I am becoming known as an Ankara (African Print fabric, not the capital of Turkey) designer. Not bad, right?
I thought about it and realized all (or at least 90%) of the items I have made in the last 3 months and maybe even further were all in ankara fabric. Probably because I know a lot of Africans and they place orders for ankara outfits as those cannot be readily found in stores over here :).

Anyway, it was time for a palette cleanser and once again, it started with a discussion with my sister.

Me: I bought this black and white knit fabric to make a quick peplum skirt. I'm thinking of flipping the fabric for the peplum so I can create some contrast.
Sis: You're making skirts, right?
Me: Maybe I can get 2 skirts out of the fabric. I'll trace the other knit skirt I made.
Sis: Skirts ... one for me.
Me: Oh. Right. Guess I could make yours first and perfect the process before I make mine.

She had her skirt (yellow floral one below) about 2 hours later. I had mine a few days later.
(And, yes, I did get 2 black and white skirts from the fabric. I'll post pictures of the 2nd one another time).

** We wore them to church on Father's Day - pictures below.

Leather & Metal Skirt: February's Make Of The Month

*   The #MakeOfTheMonth for February was a Leather and Metal Skirt. The leather part of the skirt was inspired by See Kate Sew and because I always want a little something special in my handiwork, I decided to add gold groomets around the bottom of the skirt.

**  February and March so far have been busy (good busy) so it took me a while to get this done but I’m glad I saw it through. I am currently working on 5 hours of sleep in 2 days but I wanted to get this post up .. then I'm out for the night.
The project for March is in progress and I hope to have it done in time for next week’s post. Enjoy the pictures below :).
